Kayumas
This coffee comes from the Surya Abada Kayumas Cooperative, made up of family-owned farms from the neighbouring villages of Curah Tatal and Kayumas in Situbondo, East Java. Each member farms around 2 hectares, with the cooperative collectively covering close to 400 hectares on the volcanic slopes of the Ijen Plateau. The co-op operates three centralised collection and processing centres, allowing farmers to deliver cherry quickly and maintain quality. Members also produce their own organic fertiliser from cattle, goats, and poultry, pooling resources to strengthen both farming practices and yields. Traditionally known for Giling Basah (wet-hulled) coffees, the cooperative has recently expanded into anaerobic naturals and anaerobic wet-hulled processes, bringing new depth and character to classic Indonesian profiles. Since gaining Fairtrade certification in 2018, premiums have supported agroforestry training, organic practices, biodiversity protection, and vital community infrastructure — including roads that speed up cherry delivery during harvest. These improvements help ensure consistency, sustainability, and long-term resilience for the farming community. A thoughtful, community-driven Java coffee — and a great example of why Indonesian coffees continue to offer depth, sweetness, and unmistakable character in the cup.
