Markus Coffee

13 Connaught Street London UK
30 active beans·£4.50 – £78.00

Markus Coffee opened at 13 Connaught Street, London, in 1957 and has traded continuously from the same address ever since. The business was founded by George and Eva Markus, Hungarian Holocaust survivors who fled Budapest after the 1956 uprising. George Markus had previously run a coffee bean shop in the heart of Budapest before the Communist takeover, and the London shop was a direct continuation of that work. The shop roasts on the premises daily and carries 34 varieties of beans from 13 countries. Ownership passed to Mr Sarwar, who had worked with the founders since 1976, and he has maintained the roasting operation at the same address for decades. The shop supplies hotels, restaurants and private customers, and its Regent & Negresco blend drew customers from significant distances in its earlier years.
