Colombia Finca El Troje

Unavailable About Profile Over the last few years, Juan Diego and María Elena have been trialling a new varietal – Cenicafé 1 – which is the latest cultivar released by Cenicafé (the research centre of the Federation of Colombian Coffee Growers). This cultivar is being planted in many regions in Colombia, and many farmers have had good results with it. Unfortunately, at Finca El Troje, Cenicafé 1 is not as productive as the Caturra and Castillo that Juan Diego has been growing. Colombia has an incredibly broad range of coffee growing areas which differ in altitude, soil type, climate, sunlight hours, and rainfall. Not every cultivar will work well on every farm, but the only way to really know is to plant a small test plot and see how it develops. Juan Diego planted 1600 Cenicafé 1 plants, which will be removed over time and replaced with seedlings from his own Caturra and Castillo stock. Castillo is one of Cenicafé’s most successful varietals. It was released in 2005 after more than twenty years of development and has managed to maintain its resistance to coffee leaf rust during some very difficult years. Coffee leaf rust (CLR) is a fungus which attacks the leaves on the coffee tree, making them unable to photosynthesize which leads to the death of the tree. Caturra, a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety, was discovered in Brazil in the mid 1910s. It is not resistant to CLR but is popular amongst farmers in Central America and Colombia for its very compact size and fine cup profile. All coffee research centres are looking to develop new varietals, and we will see more coming into production over the next few years.
