Producer Story Origins and History Red de Mujeres, or the "network of women," is a large group of female specialty coffee producers from five different areas of Huehuetenango. Many of these women were widowed during Guatemala's 36-year civil war or left behind when their husbands fled during the coffee crisis between 2001 and 2004. Huehuetenango was one of the areas hardest hit by the coffee crisis. Many people abandoned their farms to seek work elsewhere, leaving their families behind. With the help of ACODIHUE (Asociación Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo Integral de Huehuetenango), these female producers have united to market their coffee and connect with international buyers. The Power of Unity The group comprises 830 women, who speak eight different Mayan languages, highlighting the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of this region. ACODIHUE has provided these women with training in organic farming methods, including producing and applying fertilizers, as well as rust and pest control techniques. This support has been crucial in improving the quality and sustainability of their coffee production. The 'Geeky' Stuff
